News & Insights HKA HONOURS MANDELA DAY BY SUPPORTING CHILDREN AT NEW JERUSALEM CHILDREN’S HOME IN JOHANNESBURG Facebook Linkedin Youtube HKA HONOURS MANDELA DAY BY SUPPORTING CHILDREN AT NEW JERUSALEM CHILDREN’S HOME IN JOHANNESBURG Published: August 06, 2026 Category: Giving Back Colleagues from HKA’s South Africa office in Johannesburg marked Mandela Day on 27 July 2026 by spending time with children at New Jerusalem Children’s Home in Midrand.   Founded in 2000, New Jerusalem Children’s Home provides holistic care and support to disadvantaged children from birth to 18 years old. The organisation offers both residential care and educational facilities focused on early childhood development.    At HKA, we believe that education is one of the most powerful tools for creating opportunities and shaping brighter futures. Mandela Day reminds us that making a meaningful difference goes beyond meeting immediate needs; it is also about empowering young people with the knowledge, confidence and support they need to thrive. We are proud to have partnered with New Jerusalem Children’s Home and to have contributed to both the educational and personal development of these children,” said John Hughes, Partner, Head of Africa, International.    In honour of Nelson Mandela’s legacy and his belief in the transformative power of education, the team centred this year’s initiative on Education. HKA donated 24 stationery packs to the children and facilitated interactive discussions on mental health awareness and the impact of bullying.    The programme began with an introduction to HKA by Tshiamo Nkomo, Consultant, followed by an icebreaker session led by Neliswa Tilese, Consultant, to help the children feel comfortable and engaged. The educational session was presented by Mbalenhle Koapeng, Consultant, who spoke about bullying, encouraging the children to share their experiences and ask questions. The children participated enthusiastically, demonstrating a strong understanding of the topic and contributing thoughtfully to the discussion.   The event concluded with a final icebreaker activity, after which the children expressed their appreciation through songs and messages of gratitude to the HKA team.    “As we support disadvantaged children through providing essential educational resources, it is important to recognise that they also face challenges relating to mental health and wellbeing. Equipping young people with skills to manage stress, emotions and difficult situations is an essential part of their development, and we were pleased to engage with them on these important topics,” commented Linda Bikitsha, Managing Consultant.   Through this initiative, HKA colleagues combined practical support with meaningful engagement, helping to reinforce the spirit of Mandela Day and contributing to the wellbeing and education of children in the local community. 

News & Insights HKA HONOURS MANDELA DAY BY SUPPORTING CHILDREN AT NEW JERUSALEM CHILDREN’S HOME IN JOHANNESBURG Facebook Linkedin Youtube HKA HONOURS MANDELA DAY BY SUPPORTING CHILDREN AT NEW JERUSALEM CHILDREN’S HOME IN JOHANNESBURG Published: August 13, 2024 Category: Giving Back To honour Mandela Day, the HKA team in South Africa visited New Jerusalem Children’s Home in Johannesburg on Thursday 18th July 2024, to host a Career Day.   This year, Mandela Day encouraged us to impart knowledge and empower the next generation. Inspired by Nelson Mandela’s quote: “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world”, we held our Career Day as part of our Community Impact initiative.   New Jerusalem Children’s Home provides holistic and integrated quality care for vulnerable children.   They have been championing children’s rights for over 21 years and currently accommodate 117 children, from infants to young people aged 21.   Our Career Day aimed to share knowledge, backgrounds, and experiences in the various career paths we have within HKA, with the hope of inspiring and encouraging the children to know that every dream is attainable. With attendance by children from Grades 6 to 10, the day was directed by Tshiamo Nkomo, Consultant, with Thabiso Ntjepela, Senior Consultant, opening with an introduction to HKA for the children. Our inspiring speakers included Sonia Guerra, Associate Director, Wisani Bila, Associate Director, Lihle Ntshangase, Marketing Manager, and Rethabile Molapo, Information Technology Site Support Analyst.   We donated calculators, educational charts, counting games, chairs, tables, netballs, volleyballs, and soccer balls to support the children’s educational and physical needs.   We also provided appliances to support the running of the home and ensure the children’s overall needs are catered for, including urns, heaters, microwaves, and semi-industrial washing and dryer machines, worth over $6,000 (R114,402.91).   At the end of the day, we enjoyed lunch together.   Mr. Hopkins from the home said, “When HKA initially visited the home to engage with us and understand where our needs are, we shared a lot of the challenges we face but didn’t know HKA would come through for us the way they did; we are truly grateful.”   Thank you to the Community Impact team, Linda Bikitsha, Consultant, and Tim Harwin, Partner, our Johannesburg Community Team Committee Neliswa Tilese, Consultant, Kgotso Sebola, Consultant, Thembi Maluleke, Consultant, all HKA colleagues who attended, and New Jerusalem Children’s Home for a successful Mandela Day.   To donate to New Jerusalem Children’s Home, please visit their website.

News & Insights HKA BECOMES A BEACON OF HOPE ON MANDELA DAY AT THE OTHANDWENI FAMILY CARE CENTRE Facebook Linkedin Youtube HKA BECOMES A BEACON OF HOPE ON MANDELA DAY AT THE OTHANDWENI FAMILY CARE CENTRE Published: August 24, 2024 Category: Giving Back The HKA family believes in the continuous empowerment and uplifting of the vulnerable to build a better future for all.   In 2019, our South African office adopted the Othandweni Family Care Centre based in Soweto, Johannesburg, as part of our Community Impact initiative. Othandweni is home to 90 children, from infants to 18 years old. We have consistently kept our promise to the centre for nearly five years with donations, including funds, groceries, clothes, and appliances. As we continue to strengthen our relationship with the centre, we are proud to be part of the change and growth taking place in the lives of the children.   In addition to Othandweni, we supported the CHOC Childhood Cancer Foundation and Reach for a Dream Foundation. CHOC advocates for the health and well-being of children and teenagers diagnosed with cancer or life-threatening blood disorders and their families. We donated R104,000 (approximately US$5,400) to the course to make a difference in the fight against cancer.   HKA donated R60,000 (approximately US$3,120) to Reach for a Dream, a course that seeks to alleviate the strain that life-threatening illnesses place on sick children and their families by providing these dreamers with the opportunity to believe in their greatest wish.   Thank you to all our colleagues who continue to raise the bar through thoughtful and generous charity work.
