Shoba completed her Bachelor of Arts degree (majoring in law and sociology) at the University of the Witwatersrand and thereafter graduated cum laude from the WITS School of Law. She completed her articles at Bowman Gilfillan Inc. and was subsequently admitted as an attorney of the High Court of South Africa in 2007. The practiced in the Construction and Engineering practice area at Bowman Gilfillan for four years post articles. Thereafter she joined Aveng Grinaker-LTA, as a commercial and legal advisor, reporting to the Group Legal Manager. Her area of expertise focuses on construction and engineering law.

Her experience includes:

  • Drafting and reviewing of general commercial contracts and general legal documents
  • Advising clients on various aspects of construction law-related queries, including advice on bespoke and standard form contracts (FIDIC, JBCC and GCC)
  • Commenting on Particular Conditions, guarantees, and tender data for specific projects, including advising on associated risk
  • Advising on settlement agreements pertaining to claim disputes between employer and contractor
  • Drafting of standard form qualifications and project specific contracts (including Particular Conditions, guarantees, and appendices to contracts) from the employer based perspective and contractor based perspective
  • Drafting of general and specific maintenance contracts, and engineering, procurement and project management services contracts
  • Liaising with engineering consultants in order to align the legal and technical requirements of a construction contract
  • Assisted in providing advice for the procurement and construction of major equipment items from both local and internationally based suppliers in respect of the Medupi and Kusile Power Station
  • Regular attendance and participation at internal training workshops in modern negotiation and dispute resolution
